#ThankFall for Memories Made and Family Who Make Them $250 Giveaway

I much prefer the summer heat but we’ve been pretty lucky this year with a warmer fall than usual. The beautiful rich brown, orange and red colours of the changing trees and the golden colour of the recently cut farm crops leaves me with a need for cozy sweaters, fresh apple cider and family.

Fall doesn’t go by without a frollick in the leaves full of giggles; I remember it fondly as a child and have loved sharing those moments with my own children. No technology, no best of the best, just good old fashion imagination and play with nature’s surroundings before heading back to the house for a warm bowl of slowcooker stew. Those are the moments to be made and remembered.

This Thanksgiving seemed a little empty with my recently passed grandmother missing. Decorating the table with her most prized possessions, mixed with a modern selection of decor and serving-ware I picked up from Target, felt like she was joining us at another feast. Seeing my grandmothers china that was brought over when my great-great-grandmother immigrated to Canada nestled among the family, made me feel a bit like she was smiling down over us at our feast.

I’ve had many family dinners of a table of 20 or more and although paper plates would certainly be easier, the look of gorgeous serving dishes adds to the holiday feel. Past dinners have reminded me where I am lacking; never enough glasses for everyone. My grandmother left me more than enough tea cups and saucers to choose from but what I really didn’t have was a set of nice wine or water glasses. My girls helped me head to Target to check out the sales; luckily there was a buy one get the second 50% off sale, added with the 5% off REDCard added up to some pretty great savings.

Turkey, fixings and desserts. As much as the traditional dishes stay the same, one thing remains the same; there is always enough food to ensure everyone enjoys a tasty meal and leaves with a belly full and a dish in hand full of leftover turkey.

For me fall is full of special moments that go beyond the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s a month for giving and sharing and enjoying little flutters of moments between husband and wife, father and daughter or grandmother and grandchild. Memories become vivid once certain things become tradition, a special serving dish or vase you see at every holiday bring those memories flooding back. This holiday I added some serving pieces to my table, pieces guaranteed to have created memories already, and pieces that family members will be looking for at our next big dinner.

What I went for was servingware, what I came home with was a selection of fall colours from various departments. Target had me skimming through everything from kids clothes to Halloween decor; I couldn’t help myself. I ended up picking up some cute outfits for the littles, some boots for the teens, bedding for my tween whose room is soon to have a DIY makeover and some pretty great pieces for my Thanksgiving table. I absolutely love the bird feet salad tongs I picked up in the Halloween section at Target.

A few other things I picked up:

  • 3 gold dotted mini vases, perfect for my fall flowers
  • a wood serving bowl set
  • a silicone baking mat for my desserts
  •  a stacking measuring cup set
  • 2 sets of serving spoons
  • 2 mini bowls for olives and beets
  • an acorn salt and pepper shaker set, because they were adorable
  • 16 wine/water goblets
  • 2 wood serving planks
  • a few other things I won’t mention in case Hubs is reading this. Smirk.
