Mosquito Prevention with #GreenStrike. Yes, it works!

After months of harsh cold winter, I look forward to the nicer weather. Unfortunately with nice weather comes nasty mosquitoes that feed on you and carry disease. This year we were offered a Green Strike Mosquito Preventer unit to review and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

For the first half of the summer we experienced a drought here in Southern Saskatchewan and the mosquito population was practically nil. It wasn’t until a recent downpour where we received just over 4 inches of rain in a two day span that we saw the mosquito population explode. When our mosquito population boomed our local health officer warned the public of West Nile in the area, carried by mosquitoes. Usually most who are infected do not experience any symptoms or if they do they are mild flue-like symptoms but in approximately 1% of the population, West Nile results in serious neurological symptoms, sometimes even fatal and that isn’t a chance I will take with my family.

When we first set the unit up we were experiencing drought and as a result we didn’t have a mosquito population to compare to. Once the rain came and the first batch of eggs hatched, the mosquitoes were horrendous.

Does it really work?

In short, yes! Let me explain. This Green Strike unit is not a bug zapper, nor will provide 100% elimination of the mosquito population in your yard and it doesn’t claim to. That would be impossible dealing with a flying insect. It does however provide a 70% reduction in population.

In my opinion, it would be better suited for a city location. Although our farmyard may be within the range, we just have too much land and water space to contend with surrounding us. I can tell you that I compared the mosquitos at our farmyard to that of my in-laws who are about 1 mile from us and there was a definite reduction in mosquitos at our farmyard. This unit will provide coverage for up to a 22,000 sq ft. What I liked most about it is that it’s simple to use, low maintenance, cordless and environmentally safe.
